The Big Hole

One of the things that South Africa is famous for are its gold and diamond mines. Just two kilometers from the Don Savoy Kimberley hotel you'll find the "Big Hole" – the largest man made hole on the face of the planet. The "hole" began its life in 1871 when diamonds were discovered in an area known as Colesberg Koppie which later became Kimberley. Within the space of just a few short months more than 30,000 men were digging in a 600 square meter area, searching for diamonds. The more diamonds they found, the more they dug and the end result was this huge hole which produced the world famous, 83.5 carat Star of Africa and many other large diamonds. During its working lifetime the "hole" produced over 14.5 million carats of diamonds from 28 million tons of earth and rock.   The "Big Hole" is about 800 meters deep with shafts going down 1100 meters. Next to it is a mountain of rubble excavated during the mining process that reaches a height of 215 meters. Although no longer mined, there is a fascinating museum at the site and you can really get a feel of what it was like so many years ago, digging by hand this awe inspiring pit.
Kimberley also has other fascinating attractions that relive the life of the area and its development. Kimberley's history is rich and varied, Cecil Rhodes, the DeBeer diamond company, pre-history rock carvings, a golf museum, an aviation museum and much more. Talk to the front desk at the Don Savoy Kimberley hotel and they'll give you full information about all there is to see and do in Kimberley.
